IA MIX 392 WRECKED LIGHTSHIP
INTERVIEW BY ASMI SHETTY
Following the release of their third album last year, Adam Winchester and Laurie Osborne return as Wrecked Lightship on Peak Oil with their latest album ‘Drained Strands‘, opening the hallowed doors of their submarine to all types of distorted fantasies.
As the name suggests, Wrecked Lightship carries fractured memories of vessels forgotten in vast expanses, from the sea and beyond. The weight of their work conjures images of desolate landscapes beyond human reach, yet their invitation into this sonic vision becomes a ticket to inhabit the very space of extraterrestrials.
‘Drained Strands‘ withholds a kind of extraordinary beauty that is more often felt than heard. This combined performance unit of solo acts Appleblim & Wedge exists in an untethered vortex – one built from scattered electronics and bruised hearts. All of this culminates in IA MIX 392, a studio mix where heavy scores of bass and a plethora of textures, some borrowed and some unheard, bubble together in a melting pot of comfort and disorder.

NOW ALWAYS FADES: INTO THE DOLDRUMS
WRITTEN BY CAM HOWE
When trying to describe Into the Doldrums – the debut album of Xavier Bacash’s Now Always Fades project – lots of similar, hard-to-define words initially come to mind: floaty, misty, dreamy, airy, hazy. Whatever one you want you use, it’s music that lets you pause and breathe. This chilled, reflective ambience persists throughout the 35 minute runtime, but when you look under the surface you realise there’s an exciting amount of experimentation going on in Into the Doldrums.
Released through his own imprint Northern Underground Records, Melbourne-born producer Bacash has been churning out EPs and albums under his Sonny Ism pseudonym since 2017. Now Always Fades sees Bacash strip away the poppier, bouncier side of his music, and instead lean more heavily on live instrumentation. As well as being a term for a depressive period of stagnation, the album name comes from a windless band encircling the equator that sailors call “the doldrums”, where the north east and south east winds converge – a fitting name, for an album that sees two often separate musical stylings collide.
The live elements range from trip-hop snares, plodding bass lines and twinkly fingerstyle guitar loops. You get snippets of all sorts of genres popping up here and there – shoegaze, moody post-punk, psychedelia – but the electronic backbone unites all the components. On ‘A Pain I Used To Feel’, the chugging bass and jangling guitar create a trippy, Still Corners-esque tone, especially with Lili Halls’ ethereal tones. At the same time, you have distorted swirls from pads and synths to add a subtle atmosphere. There are crisp Madchester drums on ‘Mindflower’, while on ‘Mayhem’, the distant synthesiser lines provide a slow, sun-baked tranquillity.

MOIN: BELLY UP
WRITTEN BY CHARLIE HILL
With the release of ‘Belly Up’, Moin have embedded themselves within a distinct world suspended between sluggish and drugged-out stupors, and erratic and frenetic episodes – yet with both states as intricately constructed as the other.
Following on from their previous project, ‘You Never End’, the outfit has taken a marked pivot from the saturated, washed out guitar tones that defined much of the LP, and have replaced them in part with the cerebral saxophone playing of Ben Vince – an experimental electronic performer, akin perhaps to that of Colin Stetson in his frantic, mazy, somewhat schizophrenic runs, and whose personal work fits neatly within the sample-based approach to Moin’s harmonic orchestration.
This synthetic framework is perhaps more evident within ‘Belly Up’ than prior releases, with the project seeming to embody more of Tom Halstead and Joe Andrew’s original work as Raime – an electroacoustic duo working originally with electronic sampling, but later expanding into experimental live performance. The electronic origins of which Moin were borne out of are distinctly prevalent throughout the EP, often featuring minimal yet textured synth elements, underpinning the turbulence, providing a secure sense of groundedness for an easily overwhelmed listener.

INVERTED AUDIO RECORD STORE RETURNS TO TREVINOS RECORD FAIR AT HOUGHTON FESTIVAL 2025
Inverted Audio Record Store returns to Houghton Festival this summer (7 - 10 August) bringing stacks of quality new and used records to Trevinos.
Marking our third appearance at Craig Richards' revered festival in Norfolk, Trevinos is a dedicated record fair at Houghton, serving as a central hub for record collectors, festival-goers, performing artists and producers to connect, dig for records and celebrate vinyl culture.
The record fair is a tribute to Marcus Intalex, a pioneering UK drum and bass DJ, producer, and label owner known for his deep musical knowledge and dedication to pushing the scene forward. A mentor to many, he played a crucial role in bridging the worlds of drum and bass, techno, and house. Later in his career, under the alias Trevino, he explored house and techno, releasing music on labels such as Klockworks and The Nothing Special. Though Marcus sadly passed away in 2017, his influence continues to shape the electronic music landscape, inspiring countless artists and fans.
Since 2018, Trevinos has brought together some of the UK’s finest record stores and vinyl traders, offering a carefully curated selection of new and used records. Each trader is equipped with a listening station allowing festival-goers to preview records before purchasing. A central turntable in the yurt enables traders to play records from their stock, creating an immersive and inviting atmosphere.

FEMACOSMÉ LINE UP DEBUT SOLO ALBUM FROM RUE DES GARDERIES CO-PRODUCER SWEETZAK
Following the acclaimed debut of Rue des Garderies’ collaborative album in 2024 – ranked No. 1 in our Best Albums of the Year for its hauntingly textural take on ambient electronic music – Femacosmé label boss Raphaël Fragil announces the label’s second physical release, the debut solo album from Rue des Garderies co-producer, Sweetzak.
Played on repeat throughout 2024, Rue des Garderies seeped into ears like a fever dream- evoking deep introspection and a sense of enchanted melancholia. Sweetzak’s new album, ‘Intuitive Fields‘, follows in its wake, offering nine dreamlike compositions that navigate the outer edges of ambient music, rich with abstraction and celestial atmosphere.
Crafted like an intimate orchestra, each piece unveils a personal world – shifting landscapes and imagined skies rendered with emotional depth and textural grace. Our standout track from the album is ‘The Centre Of It All‘, a wormhole of introspection that descends into the abyss with hypnotic allure. Drawing on the looping melancholy of William Basinski, it weaves decaying textures into a sonic meditation made for mind expansion.
