IA MIX 386 SOELA
INTERVIEW BY TOM DURSTON
Following the release of her second album last week on Scissor & Thread, Berlin-based producer Elina Shorokhova aka Soela, steps up to deliver the 386th edition of the IA MIX Series, interweaving a pensive mix exploring ambient, deep house and melancholic classical music.
Having released music through notable imprints including Detroit Underground, E-Beamz, Lost Palms, Kompakt, Nerang Recordings, Cin Cin and Dial, Soela now joins the ranks of Francis Harris’ consistently on-point label Scissor & Thread with the release of her second album.
Consisting of nine heartfelt tracks, ‘Dark Portrait‘ is a deeply atmospheric body of music brimming with emotion, soundscapes, sultry vocals and lose-yourself dancefloor moments. To mark the occasion we caught up with Soela to discuss the makings of the album and her perspective on the current state of the electronic music industry.
REVIEW // HOUGHTON FESTIVAL 2024
WRITTEN BY GRACE STEWART-RICKETTS
Returning for its fifth iteration, Houghton remains a festival coveted for its meticulously curated lineup, high-quality sound and serene lake-side setting. In the wake of one of the wettest summers on UK record and just days before the festival opened its doors to the public, Houghton fans had received the devastating news that the beloved Quarry stage was flooded irredeemably. After some frantic changes to the lineup and as the dreary weather began to clear, dance music fans descended upon the hallowed grounds of Houghton Hall for a weekend of 24-hour musical mayhem.
Watching throngs of people flocking to the forest from the doorway of Trevinos, Houghton’s on-site record store, it was hard to ignore the tangible excitement in the air. This was the second year Inverted Audio had unpacked boxes of hand-selected records for lovers of esoteric sounds, or those lucky enough to stumble, unwittingly, through the doors of Trevinos. Newly housed within a yurt, this welcoming space boasted some of the UK’s top record sellers including All My Friends, Artum, Disk Frisk, Hidden Sounds, Next Door Records, Temple Of Vinyl and The Vinyl Curtain all spinning their favourite tracks in the middle of the yurt on the single deck. It was here we poured over the jam-packed schedule and talked tactics for the coming weekend.

REVIEW // GAS - GAS
WRITTEN BY JASON CABANISS
As Wolfgang Voigt’s GAS project approaches three decades of existence, its influence is so widespread that it’s often overlooked. Take a listen to any ambient techno playlists or browse new releases and the chances are good that you’ll hear strands of Voigt’s influence. One of Inverted Audio’s favourite labels, Astral Industries, boasts a discography deeply influenced by his work, and they’ve even brought in Voigt for a release under his own name. That’s only the most prominent example. You can scour any streaming service and let the algorithm lead you to countless releases that wouldn’t exist without Voigt and GAS.
Born at a time when chillout rooms aided the happy raver in coming down after a night of dancing, labels like Warp and Kompakt were branching out to release records suited for home listening. Legend has it that GAS was inspired by Voigt’s youth experiences with LSD and walking through the forests near his home of Cologne. With GAS, Voigt showed that the dance floor wasn’t the only place for a transcendent musical experience. Instead of a placid, pastoral ambient new age retreats, Voigt dived into a sound that presents an unnerving exploration of sonics and space. Like those formative moments of psychedelic experimentation, the music of GAS can feel revelatory and other worldly. It’s less of a voyage into space than a deep dive into the psyche.

MUSIC VIDEO // JEFF SNYDER - REDOX
American record label Carrier issue their next album release courtesy of New Jersey-based auteur instrument designer, master synthesist, and new music composer Jeff Snyder.
Encompassing six experimental soundscapes, ‘Loom‘ marks a compelling return to the label after a six-year hiatus, delivering a rich tapestry of modular-driven textures, fragmented club rhythms, glitch-infused noise and mutant nu-jazz. The album is a must-listen for synth enthusiasts craving otherworldly auditory experiences wrapped in cosmic reverberations.
NEWS // JOE DAVIES RETURNS TO SMALLVILLE WITH ‘PARDON MY LATE RESPONSE’
Following the release of his debut album ‘Shields In Full Sunlight‘ last year, Berlin-based producer Joe Davies makes his return to Smallville Records in September with ‘Pardon My Late Response‘.
Consisting of 4 tracks, Davies continues his trajectory to produce the deepest of deep house with three dubby tracks, bolstered with a Frankfurt Mix of ‘Hi Life‘ taken from his aforementioned album. All four tracks are suitably elegant and are packed with flirty tones and majestic timbres.

STORE // MIKE INZINGER - ICE AGE
Austrian producer Mike Inzinger self-releases his fourth acidic platter on MIR Records, dishing up four oscillating acid tracks that are devilishly lysergic. Described as “a journey into the adventurous ice age” – Inzinger delivers total delirium thanks to his dexterous approach to emulate the trademark TB-303 bass synth, creating an unmistakable ode to 90’s era acid – specifically Richie Hawtin’s output as Platikman. Highlights include ‘Maverick‘ and ‘Subsequent Logic‘. Tip!!
