IA MIX 384 SAM PURCELL
INTERVIEW BY ASMI SHETTY
Sam Purcell had been circling the peripherals of the underground music scene long before launching Blank Mind, the UK-based record label, in 2011. An early urge to create music settled quickly in his youth, eventually morphing into roles for the persistent interest in chronicling sound. A few adventures in this order stand out as wisely articulated audio narratives – exposing a quality of his innate nature and intellect as evidently visible in Blank Mind’s discography.
Each release on Blank Mind hits with precision, never missing a nerve. For reference, see “Suitcase in the Water“, the thriller spoken word D&B record produced with Jacob Dwyer will have your guts in a twist. Stepping up for IA MIX 384, we get a glimmer of the mind of Sam Purcell, digging through his music-centred thoughts and fascinations with a crisp mix fuelling an hour’s worth of listening pleasure.
REVIEW: LINA FILIPOVICH
MUSIC FOR AN IMAGINARY DANCEFLOOR
WRITTEN BY ASMI SHETTY
Charcoal skies descend silk tapestries of glazing textures, and the mind roams freely in its wishful red-carpet-lined corridors. A Paris resident of Minsk origin turns exhilarating brain conjectures into a maze of haunting sounds for seekers of surreal dispositions.
We are talking Lina Filipovich. A visual artist with previous academics in fine arts and experimental electro-acoustics influences the nature of both these fields into her perceptions of club aesthetic to create sonic broodings of oneiric quality in ‘Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor‘, her debut record on the London-based record label Blank Mind.
Filipovich exhorts a humanised machine’s fragments of thought—at the hem, unpredictable rhythms of teasing techno are co-written with analog synthesisers, sporadically rendering psychological thrill and turmoil. Restless and unsettling, her sound trickles down the spine, sprouting gooseflesh on tender skin, paralleling the aftermath of a sweaty fever dream.
High and low frequencies squeak and tremble, a mixture of alienated cyber-synths and slow-dribble drum patterns squiggling together in ‘Catwalk‘, ‘Silver Ghost‘, and ‘999‘ – the energy is metaphysical. ‘Omqroid‘, ‘Dusty‘, and ‘Villain Dot‘ squelch with electricity, error-prone machine noise slashed and pieced, open ripe wormhole vortexes for wonky body movement, edging in the dark.
In a sense, the listening exercise of ‘Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor‘ advances theatrically in the ways of a looming background score to an opening of a Lynch-like pensive and stirring act. Filipovich swims on two ends of a spectrum on this one, adapting comfortably to the unease of the murk, twiddling sentiments tastefully decoded for a dance on a dancefloor to remember.
Inverted Audio boss DJ Antepop steps up to play at Jumbi bringing a wealth of musical knowledge to Peckham. Listeners can expect music spanning; ambient, electronica, experimental, dub, deep house, IDM and all other oddities.

NEWS: BRIAN LEEDS AKA HUERCO S. LINES UP DEBUT LOIDIS ALBUM ON INCIENSO
Brian Leeds revives his much loved Loidis project with the announcement of a 8-track double LP named ‘One Day‘ on US-based record label Incienso.
Six years after the release of the beloved ‘A Parade, In The Place I Sit, The Floating World (& All Its Pleasures)‘ EP on Hank Jackson’s always on-point label anno, Leeds has been back at in the studio as Loidis creating music spanning “dubby-micro-minimal-emo-tech”.
After previewing clips, we can confirm ‘One Day‘ does indeed explore the minimal spectrum, sounding more akin to what you’d expect on labels such as Perlon, distinctly driven and significantly deep. Highlights include ‘Love’s Lineaments‘ and ‘Sugar Snot‘. Rest assured we’ve got vinyl copies on sale.
RECORD FAIR: INVERTED AUDIO X ACCIDENTAL RECORDS AT BRIXTON BREWERY TAPROOM
Inverted Audio Record Store and Accidental Records team up to host a record fair at Brixton Brewery Taproom on Sunday 28th July (12-6pm) with vinyl DJ sets from label artists and affiliates.
Accidental Records is the name for Matthew Herbert's family of records labels, incorporating Accidental Jnr, Soundslike and, until the beginning of 2004, Lifelike. It was established in 2000 to oversee the release and distribution of Herbert's music after all the labels he'd previously recorded for ceased to exist.
For those not in the know, Matthew Herbert is an English producer behind iconic deep house albums; 100 Lbs (1993), Around The House (1998), Bodily Functions (2001), Scale (2006) plus the hyper-experimental album One Pig (2011), which soundtracks an anonymous farm animal's journey from birth to plate.
Accidental have released records from The Invisible, Micachu (Mica Levi), Dave Aju, Ola Szmidt, Bambooman, Gerry Read, Jerome Hill, Wishmountain, Neil Luck, Hahmo, NikNak, Duckett and many more.
The record fair commences at 12:00 and ends at 18:00. Entry is free. The first 25 people who register for a free ticket will receive a free pint upon arrival.
