IA MIX 389 RONI // IN-STORE: DYING IN BEAUTY // RISING SUN // KCZ008 // TEQMUN // LANARK ARTEFAKT // YAS REVEN
With RONI, it’s almost as if suddenly a storm hit the city one evening, and then she was just about on a flyer everywhere. May it be the exposure to a culturally mixed French-Malaysian upbringing, her poised supremely-femme personality, or the bottomless pit of exhilarating sweat-soaked late-night rendezvous she initiates—all of it exudes an aura that undoubtedly intrigues many.
I first stumbled upon RONI’s Instagram at the beginning of 2023 via a running order post for a long night of partying in Berlin’s RSO, the revered venue formerly known as Griessmühle. Admittedly, I was a bit late to know her, for she was by then a staple in the burgeoning Paris underground, alongside a Rinse FM residency, establishing on-the-go Nehza Records while without-rest populating clubs all over Europe/ Asia as an effervescent touring DJ.
RONI’s sound curation is rooted in the continuous discovery of herself and her ravers—she ignites a euphoric connection with the crowd through a tense and undulated exchange of energies. A force of nature driving through the thicket, the dance floor swims deep in layers of UK-inspired, bass-heavy, massive-dub heaters, and cherry on top—angelic, shimmery textures for a transcendental surprise.
The same applies to the IA MIX 379, curated with much adoration by RONI herself. Pulsating rhythmic structures, machine-gun percussion, and switching tempos serve as a real treat for the journey into the delicate sonic fantasy world behind a fiercely passionate mind – get to know RONI.

REVIEW // RISING SUN: THE ETERNAL
In the smoke haze of dub techno, a genre that will never go out of style, Berlin-based producer Steffen Laschinski returns as Rising Sun to deliver ‘The Eternal,’ his latest testament to the soul-stirring power of deep, dubby beats.
From a decade-long wandering under his many guises to channel his perceptions as a vivid storyteller, The Ambientist via Rising Sun Melancholia, with ‘The Eternal‘ Laschinski makes moves as Rising Sun for a dreamy, dewy, morning-music drop for the Copenhagen-based label Echocord.
The EP offers six alternate versions of Rising Sun’s concept for ‘The Eternal‘ that paint different sentiments when interpreted with an open mind. The opening track takes centre stage with its muted drums and gripping spoken word vocals, floating the EP into glowing spaces of light with five more tracks forming five more loops, collisions of tense dub echo, jolting stabs of sub and enchanted strings, unfurl textures of hypnotic quality as the story unfolds. Our pick and premiere ‘Eternal 5,’ sheds layers to reveal the delicate truth beneath, handcrafted percussion and soft strings evoke a sense of primal energy.
No stranger to dub techno, Rising Sun continues to venture into familiar territories of the genre, thoroughly satisfied to refine, polish, and perpetuate its timelessness. Comparisons to other dub techno luminaries are inevitable, yet the artist takes a step further with his ability to infuse his music with a sense of depth. While echoes of Basic Channel and Deepchord may resonate, the sound is a carved niche, a fusion of personal influences and experiences. Naturally sublime from start to finish.

REVIEW // TEQMUN:
WORMS STILL HAVE TO EAT THE DIRT
Critical examiners who love a solid imploding experience, if not careful around Teqmun‘s new album, potentially risk hurtling into a rabbit hole stimulation of sensory climax, infested with peculiar creatures cavorting amidst twisted frequencies. ‘Worms Still Have To Eat The Dirt‘, the new mind-mischief dispatch on the Dutch record label Nerve Collect, adds to a frenzy of fire-starter releases, all of which have altered neurochemicals for good in only a year into the label’s inception.
Observations of soft yet perilous terrains of nature, influenced by the shattering, austere, subversive qualities of the wild, the local Dutch plant biologist, Teqmun—real name Tijmen Blokzijl’s giddy revelations derived from investigations of mud and dirt in his garden, disruptively mutate to IDM, breakbeat, techno, and bass to comfort the discomforted and equally unsettle the calm and composed.
Hot flashes, really intense hot flashes tucked into each track on the EP, Teqmun takes no rest ploughing through fields of synthetic, kinetic energy. On the exterior, “Hand Full of Fluff” deploys spluttering percussion into feathery synth pads, opening gates to the heavy dose of fibrillating spasms readying to break free just about the corner. “Corn Has Ears” and “A Jerboa’s Escape” hyperventilate raw industry cuts of crisp and quivering drum patterns doused with fresh kinks for serious body movement in a hypnotic vortex.
Deep in the slime, there’s a bass-face certified hot mark on the un-skippable “Slug No Escargot“; ruptured vocal cords slit through charged shockwaves of static, boisterous bass; the vibe is deliberately infectious, leaving behind nothing but splinters from mass destruction. Adding to the purpose – “Slug No Escargot” gets a machine rework in the factory with Ma Sha firing up the engines to a filthy dimension. A raw and metallic scrunch of a wrung-out synth marred with grease and grime laced atop deadly percussion makes the remix an addictive little drip hard to reject.
‘Worms Still Have To Eat The Dirt‘ diverges Teqmun from the nature of his otherwise scintillating production techniques onto squiggly, strictly metered electronics bolstered to fit the dark endeavours of a restless body and intellect. The deranged explosiveness of the album mirrors the desired taste of anxious music relentlessly delivered by Nerve Collect—a label with a portal to a pleasurable valley of extracted dreams—that keeps eyes and ears peeled.
NEWS // LANARK ARTEFAX
LINES UP ‘METALLUR’ ON AD 93
Glaswegian producer Lanark Artefax returns to AD 93 with his first release since 2019’s ‘Corra Linn‘. Resurfacing last year with an audio-visual show at Unsound, Calum MacRae now lines up a five-track extended player named ‘Metallur’.
The label described the release as “music for a crushed infinity”, and it couldn’t be more appropriate. Combining abstract, maximalist electronics with a stunning sense of artistry, ‘Metallur’ packs a wallop in its brief run time.
The title track, streaming below, sounds like a trance anthem beamed in from another dimension, the usual body high refracted through the cold nothingness of space, presenting instead a warped sonic blend that’s deliriously tripped out.
